A Pakistan Wedding
by James Adam on Dec.01, 2010, under Shaadi
Pakistan is full of culture and diversity and one of their cultural traditions is the Shaadi, or wedding. Even though it is becoming more common to choose a bride or groom for love, several families still believe in arranging a marriage for their daughter or son. There are several celebrations that are a part of the process and so the wedding arrangements usually take about a year to plan completely. These parties are tradition and are planned by the family as well.
The proposal party is the first of these celebrations. At this party, the family of the groom will ask the family of the bride to marry her. Jewelry is usually exchanged and this is to be worn on the wedding day. The engagement party is the next celebration, which is usually called the Mangni. This is the party where the rings are given, usually from the family. This is also when they decide when the wedding will be taking place.
Once the wedding date has been set in place, they will celebrate Mayun. This is the bride’s celebration and, at this point, she is not allowed to see her groom until the wedding day. This celebration is big with dancing and singing. The Dholki comes next and it consists of singing wedding songs and celebrating with the family. She traditionally wears the yellow Pakistani costume.
The groom will celebrate Barat with his family and friends as they make their way to the bride’s home for the ceremony. As he arrives at the home, he is showered with flowers by her family and friends. For the actual Shaadi ceremony, the bride and groom wear traditional dress clothing and an Islamic priest presides. They exchange vows and a Holy Koran is held over the bride’s head as she agrees to be a part of the groom’s family. The marriage papers are then signed while the guests are still present.
The tradition of Shaadi has many celebrations and comes with a lot of preparation. The proposal party, Mangni, Mayun, Dholki, and Barat are all celebrated before the actual wedding takes place. The family takes the time to plan all of these parties and makes all the arrangements for the Shaadi ceremony. There is a lot of dancing and singing to celebrate the upcoming nuptials and, although the bride and groom celebrate separately, they each get to celebrate with their family and friends, carrying on a tradition that has lasted through the ages.

by James Adam on Oct.26, 2010, under Shaadi, Sikh
Nothing cans quite a match the spice for spirit of the Sikhs. Be it the bhangra dance or their food, everything talks of their healthy heartiness and fun romantic nature. Their marriages also are colourful social functions good with conforming ritual and some music and playfulness. A true Sikh marriage ceremony is a particular ceremonial occasion where in two souls fell together to pass the rest of their lifetimes with each other. It is a joyful event and the union is well-known amidst much pomp and show. The Sikh shaadi is well-known as “Anand Karaj” which translated noodles “blissful marriage”.
A Sikh marriage ceremony is mostly performed in the Gurudwara (Sikh temple) or in any home where the holy Sikh book, Guru Granth Sahib has been established. The rituals should not be performed in a hotel or a shaadi hall. The spiritual ceremony is generally given in the morning and does not take more than a few hours. Sikh marriages are not as detailed as Hindu marriage ceremonies and are simple and mostly centre on religious practises. The ceremony and the traditions are an entire part of a typical Sikh marriage ceremony.
A Sikh shaadi is also special in the sense that it does not expect the presence of any priest to solemnise the shaadi. The marriage is carried in the presence of the holy book with a man or a woman telling verse lines from it and the dulhan. The groom and the bride have to take four rounds around the holy book. Also there are no prescribed timings to conduct the marriage ceremony. It can be taken at any time of the day or night, though the marriages are generally carried in the dawn.
Prior to the shaadi, an engagement ceremony might be performed by the parents of the dulhan and the dulhe though it is not imposed to do so. This event is normally conducted at the house of the groom or in the Gurudwara (Sikh temple). It contains Ardas (Sikh prayer), Kirtan (hymns) and Langer (meal). The dulhe is given a kirpan, Kara or Indian desserts and the dulhan is gifted traditional Indian clothes and sweets.
The shaadi day a celebration is triggered off by the baraat (family and friends of the dulhe) reaching the dulhan home in the evening. They are received between much joy and merriment. They spend the night at the house of the girl. The following day the shaadi day ceremonies are carried either at the girl’s house or at the local Gurudwara (Sikh temple). After the ceremonial occasions are over the festivities remain throughout the day. The following day the groom and the dulhan start to start their new life.
A Sikh dulhan is usually dressed in a bright coloured and heavily embellished shalwar kameez. The duppata (scarf) must cover the head of the bride. At times lehenga chunni is also worn by the dulhan. A Sikh dulhe commonly wears a kurta pyjama. He also wears the pagri (turban). The Sikhs lay a sumptuous meal for their guests. You can expect a fantastic mixture of some of the purest Indian cuisines in the marriage ceremony day menu. The marriage ceremony comes to a decision amidst much enjoyment and regards for the bride and the dulhe as they enter on their new life together.
Shaadi, Pakistani wedding
by James Adam on Oct.03, 2010, under Muslims, Pakistani Dating, Shaadi
Shaadi is the name for a Pakistani wedding. Marriages for love are becoming more common, however, most families still arrange the marriage for the bride. Family members plan the wedding, which can often take up to a year of planning. This process includes many parties and celebrations.
First, prior to the wedding comes the proposal party. This is where the family and parents of the groom ask the bride’s parents and family for her hand in marriage. Gifts of jewelry are traditionally given which are to be worn on the wedding day, although not every family does this. Next is the engagement party, or Mangni, where the rings are exchanged. The bride and groom often exchange their own rings, but individual families may still present the rings from the family. Part of the purpose of this party is to decide when the actual wedding day will be.
After the date for the Shaadi has been decided upon, Mayun is celebrated. This symbolized the upcoming wedding for the bride. She is not allowed to see her husband-to-be until the official wedding day, and is released from running errands and doing chores. Her family and close friends join in dancing, singing, and beautification rituals. The Dholki is the next celebration. The bride wears the traditional yellow Pakistani costume and sings wedding songs as she celebrates with her family. Other ceremonies to follow include the Mehndi. These celebrations are held separately for both the bride and the groom. While the groom celebrates, the bride stays home, and likewise when she celebrates, he stays home. Each celebration includes both the bride’s and groom’s families who bring henna and sweets to the celebration.
The Barat is for the groom with his friends and family as they go to the bride’s home for the Shaadi ceremony. He is usually on horseback or riding in a car with his contingency. Upon arrival at the bride’s home, her sisters, cousins and friends greet him with flower garlands and rose petals. There are several more days of traditional ceremonies before the wedding actually occurs.
For the Shaadi ceremony, the bride and groom wear special, elegant dress clothing and an Islamic priest presides. Both sides of the family and friends are present. Vows are exchanged and a Holy Koran is held above the bride’s head as she agrees to join the family of the groom. The marriage papers are then signed in front of everyone present. This is a day to be remembered for the rest of their lives.
